Why rollers split at the seam

A roller that splits usually didn’t die from rolling. It died in a car boot in August, or against a radiator, or under something heavy for six months.

Heat is the main one

EVA foam takes a compression set when it’s warm. Leave a roller under load in a hot car and it comes back with a flat spot that never quite recovers. The foam hasn’t torn — it’s just stopped springing back, and once one section is softer than the rest, that section takes more deformation every session until it fails.

Store it somewhere that doesn’t get hot. That’s most of the maintenance.

Standing beats stacking

Stood on end, a roller carries load along its length and through the hollow core, which is what the core is for. Lying under a stack of plates, it carries load across the wall. That’s the direction it’s weakest in.

If it lives on a rack, stand it up.

Surface cracks are usually cosmetic

Hairline marks in the moulded texture after heavy use are normal and don’t propagate. What matters is a crack that runs along the roller rather than around it, and any spot where the foam has gone permanently soft. Both mean the wall has lost integrity, and both get worse quickly.

Cleaning

Damp cloth, mild soap, air dry. Not alcohol, not solvent-based gym wipes used daily — those dry the surface out over months and the texture starts shedding.

None of this is demanding. It’s mostly: don’t leave it hot, don’t leave it squashed.
